“Dance like nobody’s watching” doesn’t work for Gen Z when everybody’s filming.More young concert- and club-goers are standing still than ever before, wary of becoming the next viral clip on socials. Even artists have noticed: Tyler, the Creator lamented that “a natural form of expression” is now “a ghost” thanks to constant surveillance, and Grammy-winning DJ Kaytranada has started calling out stationary crowds mid-set. One 21-year-old summed up the anxiety on TikTok: “If you do something stupid, there’s a chance you’re going to become a big joke.” To Gen Z, this isn’t apathy to joy, it’s self-preservation. YPulse data backs this up: 57% of teens and 48% of young adults worry about being cringey because someone might be filming them. Some venues are now banning phones on dance floors to break the spell and make dancing carefree again. (WSJ)
