Laundry brands are tweaking their formulas thanks to Gen Z’s love of matcha (and the stains that come with it.) Unilever has named matcha its inaugural “stain of the year,” with the Japanese tea topping their new “stains index” which tracks emerging marks driven by lifestyle trends. Their data shows 70% of Gen Z report staining their clothes weekly, compared to just 16% of Boomers. And the most striking insight from Unilever is the 91% of Gen Z who have thrown away clothing due to stains. Top culprits mentioned include matcha (39%), Aperol (38%), and sriracha (34%). It’s not just food and drink, either—makeup, fake tan, and nail polish round out the list on the stains index. So, the company has reformulated its Persil and Surf brands to tackle matcha, Aperol spritz, and bubble tea stains—all for younger consumers. (The Guardian)
