Gen Z went back to the movie theaters in droves this year. Cinema United’s 2025 report shows Gen Z attendance jumped 25% year-over-year, with 41% going at least six times (up from 31% in 2024). YPulse data backs this up: theater attendance is nearly back to pre-pandemic levels, and 39% of young adults now say they’d choose going IRL over watching on streaming for a new release. But the draw isn’t nostalgia, as most suspect; rather, it’s the rare chance to be fully immersed without phones and sharing reactions in real time. There’s a social energy in moviegoing—and when it’s framed as an event, they’ll show up. As we saw with films like A Minecraft Movie and the limited viewings for KPop Demon Hunters, theaters became pop culture spaces complete with viral moments that Gen Z didn’t want to miss out on.
