TikTok’s facial harmony trend is back, but some are pushing back this time. The idea first went viral last year: filters that divide users’ face into thirds measure whether their proportions are “balanced.” The idea borrows from Renaissance-era art principles, not science, but that hasn’t stopped it from racking up millions of views. And now, it’s resurfaced with a fresh wave of creators debating having “long midfaces” vs. “short midfaces,” many deeming short midfaces superior, and offering makeup “cures” to fix perceived flaws. This time, though, the backlash is just as loud. One dermatologist responded saying “there’s no such thing as a face trend” calling the concept “dangerous,” because it manufactures insecurities about natural features. Users are venting in comments too, with one writing “guys we are losing the plot,” showing frustration with trends that sort people on perceived attractiveness by only one rigid standard. (The Tab)
