Gen Z finally has scientific proof for why adulthood feels impossible. Cambridge University neuroscientists recently studied 3.8K brain scans (0-90-years-old) and found that the brain doesn’t enter its most stable phase until around 32-years-old. They classify this phase as when people hit a “plateau in intelligence and personality” that lasts over three decades. Researchers stressed that brain development is non-linear, meaning each phase has unique strengths rather than being “better” or “worse.” But Gen Z, who is already struggling to hit traditional milestones, is latching onto this as validation. “I was really wondering why my life isn’t together yet, it’s because I’m still a child,” one person posted. Whether or not that’s what the study actually proves, Gen Z is running with it—just as they’ve long latched to the popular narrative about their prefrontal cortex developing by 25-years-old.
