Gen Z and Millennials aren’t spending as much on “slop bowl” food chains. Fast casual brands like CAVA, sweetgreen, and Chipotle are all reporting fewer young visitors (25-35-years-old) lately. And while they point mainly to budget constricting, as these customers often choose fast food instead, that’s not the only factor. The phrase “slop bowl” has come to mean fast casual food that simply throws all ingredients into a bowl, sometimes charging up to $20 or more. Experts say innovation is what will save these chains, not slashing prices alone. Though, moves like sweetgreen increasing the size of protein portions certainly can’t hurt. Still, Gen Z and Millennials are picking their dining based largely on price—so fast food and even casual sit downs like Chili’s are winning for their value. (Business Insider)
