Gen Z chooses animation and friendship in TV shows over more risqué plots. UCLA’s Teens & Screens survey of 1.5K 10-24-year-olds found Gen Z gravitates toward animation (as we’ve said for some time), a preference which jumped from 42% to 48.5% year over year. But Gen Z also wants stories that mirror their lives more than fantasy or aspirational stories, and with friendship as the main focus over romance. As 48% say there’s too much sexual content in TV, 54.1% want characters uninterested in romance entirely. (Even though many of their favorite shows are totally romance-centric.) And although the majority of their watch time comes from YouTube or TikTok, Gen Z is eager to connect over entertainment IRL, with 53% discussing movies and TV with friends more than social content. Like we called back in 2015, young viewers’ desire for wholesome content over a “sex sells” mentality is reinventing studio priorities. (Variety)
