Speaking of soda, Gen Z is taking over gas station soda fountains for “heavy sodas.” In gas stations throughout the U.S., Gen Z is boosting the syrup-to-water ratio in their soda fountains for a sweeter, more intense drink. The stronger mix helps the drink hold up against melting ice, letting a single soda last hours and stretch a tight budget—a practical hack for budget-conscious Gen Z. Not to mention, the trend taps into Gen Z’s love of little treats and soda, of course. TikToker Early Pete notes that this trend isn’t new—it’s long been a practice in southern Missouri—and the name riffs on Budweiser’s infamous “Bud Light” rollout, when fans dubbed the original brew “Bud Heavy.” Health experts, however, aren’t fans, warning that heavier sodas can increase the risk of cavities and enamel erosion. Still, for young consumers seeking something fun, communal, and a little indulgent, heavy sodas are hitting all the right notes. (The Tab)
