“Youngism” is locking Gen Z out of jobs before they even start. AI often gets the blame for killing off entry-level jobs, but a bigger issue is how companies hire. Since 2022, young workers have seen a sharp drop in opportunities, thanks to “youngism”—stereotypes that they’re lazy or not job-ready. In reality, Gen Z is hustling harder than ever (59% have side gigs), but managers misread their push for stability, mental health, and flexibility as low effort. Many entry-level postings now demand 3–5 years’ experience, internships rarely convert to full time, and in general, Gen Z is judged negatively for their work expectations. But many say if businesses keep shutting the door on beginners, they’ll pay for it later with higher turnover, pricier hires, and slower growth, as Gen Z will be a third of the workforce by 2030.
