Spain just voted to extend parental leave. Spain has been at the forefront of progressive laws in the past few years, from the right to a menstrual leave to a gender determination bill. The government’s latest move is the addition of one more week of maternity leave (from 16 to 17) and two paid weeks for childcare until a child is eight-years-old. The new rules also include special support for single parents, 80% of whom are women, with up to 32 weeks of paid leave. Many countries in the region are currently ramping up their support to young parents, through better childcare funding to longer parenting leaves, to address fast declining birth rates.
