Young people’s latest “granny hobby”? Bird watching. Earlier this year, YPulse reported that Gen Z is loving hands-on “granny hobbies” like knitting, playing mahjong, and starting their own garden. The activities allow them to slow down and take a break from excessive doomscrolling, and now, many have taken up bird watching as a way to stay present and feel more connected to their surroundings. One NYC-based bird watcher with over 30 years of experience says he’s noticed, “In the past few years, young people—and not necessarily birdy or nerdy ones—have taken to the parks of NYC to catch a glimpse of the birds.” Young bird watchers have even joined or started their own clubs, with many saying the act brings them joy because it’s “kind of like collecting Pokémon, except instead of collecting Pokémon, I’m tabbing birds in my guidebook.” (Salon)
