Could cinema-style edits influence young viewers to watch baseball? It’s no secret that the MLB has been trying everything to attract young viewers—whether turning their star players into anime heroes or teaching their players how to connect with fans online. Now, Mets broadcast director John DeMarsico has gone viral for a cinematic compilation video that paired changing camera angles, dramatic music, and even a Planet of the Apes reference with footage from Mets games. The video, shared with the hashtag #BaseballisCinema, struck a chord—especially with younger viewers who don’t necessarily keep up with sports via streaming or cable, but still crave unique content on social. DeMarsico’s post earned thousands of new followers on his account overnight, and with 52% of 13-39-year-olds watching sports highlights on social media according to YPulse data, this fusion of film and baseball might just be what keeps them watching.
