Speaking of trouble with AI, some students are struggling to prove they didn’t use it. YPulse data shows 69% of college students have used an AI tool for help with homework. But many who haven’t (at least on specific assignments) are now facing repercussions from their professors and universities due to AI-detection tools scanning their writing. For instance, a student at the University of Houston-Downtown was forced to turn in a 15-page PDF of time-stamped screenshots from her writing process to prove she did not use AI, even though the plagiarism-detection service on Turnitin claimed she did. While teachers and students alike are having to adjust to the use (and misuse) of AI in education, it’s clearly affecting students who are doing their own work and following the rules. To combat these accusations, many students are now using self-surveillance methods like screen recording their process while they do their schoolwork. (NYT)
