TikTok’s “accidental slam poet” makes artful critiques of “brainrot.” Heidi Becker is speaking to feelings many online—particularly young women—have about microtrends, overconsumption, technology, and all the things that make social media what it is now. Her videos first started gaining traction last summer, when she posted a slam poetry-esque, high-speed commentary on everything buzzing at the time, from “teddy bear bronde” hair to finding an outfit dupe on an influencer’s Amazon storefront. She often points out how the quick trend cycle results in tons of waste and even stress for viewers feeling the need to keep up, and her followers clearly find relief in someone expressing it so spot on. Is it somewhat ironic that she’s now a bit of an influencer herself? Maybe, but Becker does say she aims for “meaningful” partnerships and also posts on Substack, bringing her content out of short-form video, too. (Her Campus)
