Speaking of dating apps, being “cringe” is young people’s biggest fear there.

May 14 2025

Speaking of dating apps, being “cringe” is young people’s biggest fear there. Many Gen Z are worried that being too earnest on a dating profile might come off as desperate—and that fear of vulnerability is driving a wave of irony-soaked dating profiles where sarcasm and lighthearted jokes take center stage. While Gen Z’s version of ironic detachment does echo what Millennials did before them, this gen’s humor-armor is shaped by a growing up in a world where being judged online is all they know. But by constantly keeping things light, many young daters might be missing out on what some are actually looking for: meaningful connection, because YPulse data shows 43% of 18-24-year-olds who use dating apps do so to find their future partners.
