Young creators are driving #SkinnyTok, and experts say their content could be seriously harmful. One search of the hashtag shows a multitude of young TikTok creators sharing what they call “brutally honest” weight-based advice, like “Food is good for 15 minutes. Now you’re big for 15 years,” and “Do you want to look hot on the boat or sink it?” And while some viewers are praising the #SkinnyTok community for offering “tough love” advice, experts like Dr. Erin Parks, who is well versed in eating disorders, are concerned about the amplification of “depressive, self-critical thoughts.” She warns this tone and hyperfocus on eating habits could reinforce the notion that one’s worth is tied to appearance, especially for young, still developing viewers. And even though popular #SkinnyTok creators like 34-year-old Erin Fine have publicly said they aren’t promoting unhealthy or disordered habits, that’s not immediately clear to viewers who come across the advice without context.
