The all-women space trip was part historic moment, part meme gold. By now, you’ve heard that Katy Perry and Gayle King were part of the all-female group recently launched into space with Blue Origin for an 11-minute trip. The mission was pitched to the public by Perry as “making space for future women,” both in the world of STEM and actual space. The trip even included Perry singing in orbit to scientist (and actual astronaut) Amanda Nguyễn, who used the time to conduct a menstrual fluid absorption experiment. The internet had fun with it—or making fun of it—especially the singer’s post-flight ground-kiss moment. But others including celebs like Emily Ratajkowski, Olivia Munn, and Amy Schumer called the trip tone-deaf, criticizing its cost and environmental impact while regular people struggle with the cost of basic needs.
