Some young Spanish men think authoritarianism isn’t all bad. This year, Spain is recognizing “50 Years of Spain in Liberty,” marking the time since dictator Franciso Franco died and Spain entered a new era of governing. And while the number of Spaniards who look back on the years of authoritarianism even somewhat positively is just over one in 10, a poll by 40db found 26% of 18-26-year-old Spanish men agree that in “some circumstances authoritarianism is preferable to democracy,” and 23% of 27-46-year-old men say the same. Young women were slightly less likely to agree, at 18% and 13% of those age groups respectively. The sentiment seems to align with the rising far-right movement in Spain, as young Spanish people deal with low salaries and a major housing crisis. (World Politics Review)
