Is Gen Z really reviving Tumblr? While it’s true that the young gen loves to romanticize the Y2K era and the vibe social media had back then, just as with retro tech, the nostalgia is different than the reality. The platform is often framed as a safe space away from the current social landscape created by tech moguls like Musk and Zuckerburg, and it’s been rumored multiple times in the last few years that it’s on the comeback—even when X, then Twitter began its decline. Business Insider reports that 50% of Tumblr’s active monthly users in 2025 are Gen Z, with 60% of new users signing up belonging to the gen as well. But while Tumblr is “the 10th-most-popular social media site in the US,” YPulse data shows it doesn’t rank in the top 10 social platforms used by 18-24-year olds—not even their top 15 in fact, with only 9% using it, and even fewer teens. The app’s so-called resurgence is more likely a niche movement rather than a major comeback, leaving Tumblr as an occasional nostalgic retreat rather than a real returning platform.
