Two high schoolers founded Cal AI, a calorie tracking app with millions of downloads and $2M in revenue. Launched last May, Cal AI took off fast, using artificial intelligence to scan food and track calories, putting it up against other top health apps like MyFitnessPal. Teenagers Zach Yadegari and Henry Langmack say they’ve taken a more traditional approach to building their breakout startup, focusing on strong coding fundamentals rather than just trend-driven development. The teens report that the app has generated over $2M in revenue as of February—although the revenue claims have not been verified by Tech Crunch—and the app has over 1M downloads on Google Play. With calorie tracking apps already existing, the idea was set apart by using advanced image recognition models, using different ones worked better for different foods, which they say give results that are 90% accurate.
