Fourth graders in the U.S. perform worse in math testing post-pandemic.

Dec 05 2024

Fourth graders in the U.S. perform worse in math testing post-pandemic. This year is the first time the international TIMSS assessment for math and science proficiency, which is run every four years since 1995, has been administered since 2019. And the commissioner of the National Center for Education Statistics calls the U.S. results “devastating.” Though U.S. fourth graders still rank among the middle for measured countries (24th among 52), their average score dropped -18pts. This drop was not uniform though; the decrease comes mainly from students already in the bottom 10% of scores, whose average score dropped by -37pts since 2019. Demographic information from the test also reveals a returning divide between boys’ and girls’ scores, and lower scores among students in lower-income households. (Chalkbeat)
