Teens and young adults’ top goal right now is feeling safe.

Nov 19 2024

Teens and young adults’ top goal right now is feeling safe. New research indicates that Gen Z (10-24-year-olds) place safety above all else on a list of 14 potential goals, likely because of issues like gun violence, mental health, and climate change permeating their early lives. Its place in the ranking decreases as they mature into young adulthood though, where kindness and self-acceptance become more important goals, though safety remains ranking high. In more specific demographics, young people of color prioritize safety as their top goal, whereas white and Latino youth placed “being kind” in the top spot. Similarly, Gen Z boys ranked having fun and being kind over safety, while girls and non-binary youth ranked safety as their top goal—reflecting other evidence that girls and LGBTQ+ students track higher for having mental health issues and face more violence than young boys.
