Is Gen Z intentionally avoiding promotions into management positions? In a work trend being called “unbossing,” it seems more than half of young employees are planning not to take middle management roles as they progress in their careers. And it’s not exactly hard to see why: a 2023 survey found 67% of managers were “overwhelmed by the growth of their job responsibilities,” according to HR leaders. Instead, this gen wants an “individual route to career progression over managing others,” which prioritizes their own skills development without having to oversee anyone else’s. However, they do know becoming a manager isn’t entirely avoidable if they want to move up the corporate ladder, and Gen Z is already starting to make up more management roles than they did a few years ago.
