More than one voting barrier is influencing low Gen Z turnout.

Oct 24 2024

More than one voting barrier is influencing low Gen Z turnout. While 92% of young people express interest in election coverage, the disparity between this number and actual voter turnout is significant—among eligible Gen Z (12-27-years-old) voters in 2022, only roughly 28% voted in the midterms. But this issue isn’t solely due to young voters not caring; they’re navigating a system they don’t have much information about at times (like on registration deadlines), and in which barriers like having a license or voting locations effect this gen significantly. Additionally, the media’s inability to effectively engage with youth audiences leaves many young voters feeling disconnected and uninformed as they approach the election. Experts see a lack of generationally conscious outreach from campaigns (read: through social media) and inconsistent civic education as other primary causes. (Harvard Political Review)
