Teens are utilizing generative artificial intelligence—many without their parents’ knowledge. According to a new survey from Common Sense Media of parents and their teens, 70% of teens said they use generative AI regularly, but only 37% of their parents are aware of this. Teens familiar with generative AI frequently turn to it for homework help, out of boredom, and for language translation. But, although many are exploring its capabilities, they often lack an understanding of the complexities and potential for spreading misleading or inaccurate information. For parents, it will be nearly impossible to shield their children from AI entirely. But given that the survey also indicates conversations about AI aren’t always happening at school, parents might need to be the ones supervising their online activities to mitigate the risk of exposure to harmful content.
