Snapchat might actually positively impact users’ well-being. Larger platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube showed in two recent studies to have negative impact on users’ mental health in the dimensions of friendship closeness, well-being, and self-esteem—but Snapchat did not. In turn, the University of Amsterdam suggests that instead of condemning all social media for negatively impacting mental health, with Snapchat particularly standing out for its emphasis on connection through messaging. They note that social connections through platforms like Snapchat can actually help reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety which disconnection driven by social media are often associated with.
