Young people can make any app a dating app, even Duolingo. Young singles argue that hobby-based apps like the workout app Strava and movie review platform Letterboxd are more natural-feeling dating alternatives to cookie-cutter dating apps. With the rise of subscription costs and the monotony of sifting through dating profiles, traditional online dating seems to be a thing of the past. The comfort of knowing they share similarities with potential love interests even before interacting with them ensures meaningful connections and has resulted in Gen Z and Millennial pairings on unlikely apps like Yelp. One 22-year-old software developer who reconnected with a college acquaintance on Strava believes that soon, people will build romantic connections, “on every single app that exists…on Uber Eats or whatever…it’s just bound to happen.” YPulse’s What’s The Situationship Report found that over four in 10 Gen Z and Millennials agree that social media is an essential part of their dating life, and it’s evident that no app is off-limits.
