TikTok Shop is encouraging more creators than ever to promote (low quality) products for commission. TikTok was already a central location on social media for product recommendations and affiliate links that let users profit off a purchase, even if it’s not their product. But since the launch of TikTok Shop last month, users are seeing more click-to-buy videos than ever—thanks to the level of commission making it offers—but perhaps needing them more, given that a search for a product on the tab may yield a variety of counterfeit results. Despite the fact that counterfeits (not to be confused with dupes) are “expressly forbid” from the shop, plenty of listings exist for brand-name products at wildly lower price points, which prompts creators to show off trying each listing for validity. YPulse’s Link in Bio trend report shows social shopping is popular for young consumers because they don’t have to hunt for a purchase link themselves, but most actually prefer to click links from brands rather than creators.
