New research shows that the digital gender divide is significantly affecting teenage girls. The 2023 Girls & Mobile report was just released by Girl Effect, an international nonprofit that aims to close the technological gender gap with inclusive media and tech. One of the key findings was that only 66% of girls reported ever using a smartphone, compared to 78% of boys. Much of this has to do with the perception that girls are more vulnerable online, so their parents aren’t allowing them to get mobile devices. The report explains “Girls are internalizing what they are being told (that they are ‘vulnerable’) and acting in a way that reinforces these gender norms and limits their online usage.” (Mashable)
