Gen Z is lonely—and they’re spending hefty amounts in attempts to make friends. A survey from the Harvard Graduate School of Education found that one-third of young adults (18-25-years-old) feel lonely frequently, almost all the time, or all the time. In turn, this cohort was found to experience higher rates of loneliness than any other age group. And now, some say Gen Z is paying expensive memberships for gyms and social clubs just in hopes of meeting new friends, especially since the pandemic took away so much socialization. One member of Gen Z, who’s paying over $270 per month in rock-climbing / jiujitsu memberships says, “These types of activities ease the process of making friends more so than free activities because they tend to be more structured.” YPulse research shows that 28% of Gen Z says they often / always feel lonely—but how much they’ll spend to end that loneliness is a different story.
