A new lawsuit is challenging the Texas governor’s TikTok ban on college campuses. A group of First Amendment-focused lawyers just filed a lawsuit on behalf of the Coalition for Independent Technology Research after members who are college professors in the state claimed “their work was compromised” as a result of the TikTok ban on campus Wi-Fi and university-issued computers. The lawyers are part of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, who are working to get university faculty exempt from the social media platform bans, which are in effect (to some degree) in over 20 states. Associate professor from the University of North Texas and digital media scholar Jacqueline Vickery explains that TikTok isn’t just used for leisure, there’s also “a whole lot of research happening with and through the site as well as a whole lot of teaching.” If this ban continues to grow, it will have a huge effect on Gen Z, as YPulse research shows TikTok is their favorite (and most used) social media platform.
