T-Mobile teamed up with the MLB to bring augmented reality and drones to the All-Star game. For the All-Star experience at the T-Mobile Park in Seattle this past weekend (and the All-Star game yesterday), the mobile carrier offered 5G for users to access the MLB Next app where they could view 3D imaging of ball distance, launch angles, and an interactive strike zone. The AR additionally supported an automatic ball-strike system where calls could be challenged as they happened. The technology from this collab aimed to “enhance the gameday experience,” even capturing live 5G footage from a drone camera during the game to stream on MLB.com, Facebook, Twitter, and MLB.TV. This marketing move was smart on MLB and T-Mobile’s part, since YPulse’s Sports and Athletics report data shows 64% of young people who follow sports watch them on live TV, but more watch games through streaming.
