Sunscreen brands are navigating cleaner products to appeal to consumer values. Listening to customer concerns over harsh chemical ingredients and wanting more sustainable options, sunscreen companies are developing new, clean product alternatives. Oxybenzone and octinoxate—the two main ingredients previously contained in most sunscreens—are now being frowned upon due to being linked with cancer and their negative effect on the environment, and are even banned in Hawaii and Key West. Now, brands recognize that in order to keep up with the changing market, they need to offer more options. The CEO of popular sunscreen and skincare SPF brand Supergoop explains that, “Our end goal, as a brand, is to get everyone on this planet to wear sunscreen every single day. There’s no way you can do that with one single formula.” YPulse research shows that Gen Z and Millennials care deeply about brands going green and especially offering more eco-friendly products.
