The Philadelphia Flyers’ “Learn to Play Rookie Program” is helping young girls get in on the sport. While the program has been flourishing for eight years already, this year the Flyers have created a division to encourage more girls (ages 5-9-years-old) to participate. Girls have always been welcome to the program, but the team says having a dedicated girls’ hockey Learn to Play program will help accelerate their willingness to join. According to the National Hockey League, “studies have shown that when young girls begin their hockey journeys in an all-girl environment, they are more likely to continue with the sport.” Plus, the NHL is recognizing the importance of mentorship and role models for young girls’ developmental success. Research YPulse has done for mentor group Être found that 86% of young girls say they would feel more confident if they had a mentor. (NHL)
