Glaze is a new app protecting artists’ original artwork from being stolen or used in artificial intelligence generators. The tech started as a research project from the University of Chicago and now they just “launched a free (non-commercial) app for artists to combat the theft of their ‘artistic IP’ — scraped into data-sets to train AI tools designed to mimic visual style — via the application of a high tech ‘cloaking’ technique.” Basically, Glaze analyzes an artist’s work and produces a modified version, making changes that are barely visible, which allows the new “cloaked” image to disrupt AI tech’s mimicking process. While AI art generators quickly became trendy online, they’ve created some controversial buzz around the fact that the AI tech is stealing content from artists to create a smorgasbord of “new” art. One Twitter thread “by voice artist Jenny Yokobori explained that AI apps creating art, such as Lensa, ‘are predatory and intend to replace artists.’” (TechCrunch)
