More Black parents are homeschooling their kids. While the pandemic caused a surge in families choosing to homeschool their children, social unrest and debate about teaching Black history as part of public schools’ curriculum has made a growing number of Black families choose the homeschooling route. According to census data, “the number of Black households homeschooling their children jumped from 3.3% at the start of the pandemic in 2020 to 16.1% by the fall of that year.” Black parents are especially pulling their children from schools that have lower diversity rates and don’t prioritize teaching Black history as national debate continues over teaching students about systemic racism. When homeschooling their children, Black parents feel they have more control over what their child is taught and more importantly how they are treated. (CNN)
