In more artificial intelligence news, AI-generated fiction is taking over literary magazines. Recently Asimov’s Science Fiction noticed they were receiving hundreds of AI-generated stories all with the same title (The Last Hope). While the mag’s editorial team has quickly learned to spot clear indicators of AI submissions (like some not even bothering to change “[name]” to their own name), they’re still dealing with an influx of submissions with similar plotlines and titles. Popular science fiction and fantasy magazine Clarkesworld announced they will be pausing writer submissions altogether after receiving 500 machine-generated stories in February alone. Other publishers like Flash Fiction Online are making sure to announce that they will only be accepting submissions from humans and will ban any work they “suspect to be primarily generated or created by language modeling software, ChatGPT, chat bots, or any other AI apps, bots, or software.” (The Verge)
