The classic ‘90s book The Rainbow Fish is being cancelled by Millennial parents and teachers.

The classic ‘90s book The Rainbow Fish is being cancelled by Millennial parents and teachers. At first glance, the children’s book is about a fish “with glittering scales, who is too proud for the other fish, but ends up giving away his prized scales and becomes friends.” While this can be interpreted as a story about being kind to others, more Millennial parents and teachers who grew up with this book as a kid have realized it sends the wrong message and believe the story shows that the main character had to give up pieces of himself (by handing out his shiny scales) to win over friends. Elementary teacher Danny Vuong is going viral on TikTok for sharing his take on the issue and how he teaches the book to his class. He implores in his students that they shouldn’t have to give up any part of themselves for anybody and wishes the story “played on Rainbow Fish’s character flaw – which was that he was not humble.” (Kidspot)
