“Goblin mode” is the antithesis to “that girl”—and it’s Oxford University Press’ word of the year.

Dec 09 2022

“Goblin mode” is the antithesis to “that girl”—and it’s Oxford University Press’ word of the year. This year, people were able to vote on the OUP’s word of the year for the first time ever, and surprisingly, “‘Goblin mode’ triumphed, racking up 318,956 votes – 93% of the total” votes, even rising above “metaverse,” which came in second. Crafted by Gen Z, “goblin mode” encapsulates a messy mindset and state of living, like staying in pajamas all day and having crumbs in your sheets, but it can also mean being self-indulgent and greedy. These traits were familiar to many during lockdown, but Gen Z has carried over the term, making it a lasting personality trait. “Goblin mode” is essentially a rebellion for those who are tired of seeing perfect “day in the life” content on social media with creators’ posting their green smoothies and early morning workouts. YPulse’s What is Wellness? trend research found that a quarter of Gen Z and Millennials believe health and wellness culture on social media needs to be redefined and 21% agree that it’s toxic.
