Indie sleaze now has an aquatic sister: enter “mermaid sleaze,” TikTok’s new aesthetic. Eager to fulfill their childhood mermaid dreams, and live out their Aqua Marine, H2O: Just Add Water, and Little Mermaid fantasies, Gen Z has been obsessing over “mermaid sleaze.” The trend taps into dark fantasy and folklore, and has more to do with embracing the ocean’s dark colors and ominous creatures than anything Disney-related. Like indie sleaze, these aquatic looks tie in #SirenEyes and include “heavy makeup, ripped seams, and overall salty anarchy.” YPulse’s Fits For The Feed trend report dives into young consumers’ style and found that TikTok and Instagram are their main sources of fashion inspiration these days.
