Lizzo is spreading powerful messages about what it means to be a Black woman in the music industry.

Dec 06 2022

Lizzo is spreading powerful messages about what it means to be a Black woman in the music industry. The Grammy and Emmy winner has received criticism about her music “not being Black enough” and “making music for White people,” but recently she shared her thoughts on the statements. In an informative message, Lizzo says that the creation of genres in music was “inherently racist” and was built to prevent White people from listening to music from other cultures. However, she says she’s happy to see that Black and Brown people are headlining the pop industry: “Now pop music is really rap in its DNA — rap is running the game, and I think that’s so cool.” Lizzo says her biggest criticism comes from people saying her music (and fanbase) is “too White,” but she clapped back by making it clear that she makes music for women and girls like her and anyone who can relate to her life experiences.
