TikTok is circulating harmful content about nutrition and dieting. We know young people think wellness culture is toxic—but Gen Z’s favorite app is making sure the content stays on their screens. According to the University of Vermont, “food, nutrition, and weight loss content on TikTok encourage a ‘toxic’ diet culture among teens and young adults.” The study found that “the most viewed content idealizes weight loss and depicts food as a way to be thin and healthy.” The opinions of influencers are being shared more often than professionals, which is alarming since YPulse data shows that Gen Z and Millennials are turning to social media and other sources for wellness information well before they turn to doctors or medical professionals.
