New parents need to be reminded that babies don’t need fancy things to be safe, healthy, and cared for. With pressure from social media over the years doctors have taken notice that new parent anxiety has worsened and the desire to get the best accessories for newborns has intensified. YPulse’s Millennial Parent report data shows that over a third of Millennial parents have purchased something for their child after seeing it on social media. While parents have always been overwhelmed by friends, family, and even strangers’ advice, now they’re bombarded with unsolicited “recommendation lists, comment sections, and Amazon reviews—telling [them] what [they] should and shouldn’t buy.” Now when preparing for a baby, it’s not just about picking out a stroller, it feels like whatever brand or model they select is going to be a reflection of the kind of parent they’ll be. But the truth is, their child’s future success is not dependent on fancy products. (The Atlantic)
