A quarter of U.S. Gen Z and Millennials under 30-years-old are getting their news from TikTok. YPulse research shows just how much TikTok use has grown among young people—and our Social Media Behavioral report data also shows that 25% of Gen Z and 29% of Millennials are signing onto social media to follow news content. Because of this, U.S. news organizations are flocking to the app in order to reach these young audiences. For example, “The New York Times’ Jamelle Bouie, CNN’s Max Foster, and BBC’s Victoria Derbyshire read the news or give political analysis on the app. NBC News produces a show called ‘Stay Tuned for TikTok.’” Yet, there’s also a ton of buzz around the constant misinformation on the app, but YPulse’s News Consumption and Trust report data shows that while social media is the top place Gen Z and Millennials get news, they also recognize it’s not always the most trustworthy source.
