Speaking of wellness, more universities are allowing mental health days—but are they actually helping students?

Speaking of wellness, more universities are allowing mental health days—but are they actually helping students? At Northeastern University, students are being encouraged to take two wellness days intended to “nurture their mental health” and count as excused absences. While the university introduced this policy with good intentions, students are reluctant to actually take the time off. Many argue that missing two days worth of class just sets them behind and actually ends up worsening their academic anxieties. When asked how they would spend their mental health day, some say that they’ll just use the time to catch up on assignments. Since the pandemic, mental health has become a focal issue for colleges; and whether they’re helpful or not, YPulse’s Mental Health report data shows that 68% of college students have taken a mental health day.
