Netflix’s Spirit Rangers is a new kids series set on highlighting Indigenous representation. Voiced by Native American actors, including showrunner Karissa Valencia of the Samala Chumash tribe, the animated show follows Native siblings Kodi, Summer, and Eddy who are Spirit Rangers who help protect their sacred home—a national park. The storylines follow real Indigenous tales Valencia grew up hearing, and showcases the lives of Indigenous peoples who grow up on reservations. Valencia wanted to share her culture’s story by educating children about how “Natives are so much more than just leathers and feathers and [being] only in history books.” The show also teaches children the importance of connecting with nature and protecting our earth—which are values Indigenous peoples hold close. YPulse’s Representation in Action trend research shows that BIPOC parents want part of their child’s identity reflected in the media they consume. Our data shows that more than two in five BIPOC parents have had their child watch a TV show / movie because it featured a diverse cast and close to half have had their child watch a TV show / movie centered around their own race.
