Frances Tiafoe is pushing for diversity in tennis. Last week, 24-year-old Tiafoe became the first Black American man to make the US Open semifinals since 1972. It’s an indication of how rare Black tennis players are, a fact that Tiafoe is vocal about changing. He says that the lack of diversity in the sport made him feel like an “outsider” and he wants Black children to have role models to look up to, he wrote, “I wanted people to know that everybody matters. It does not matter who you are, where you come from or what the color of your skin is. Everybody has the opportunity to be something special.” Tiafoe has also been active in racial injustice awareness within the sport, and plans to “use his platform to enact social change, both on and off the courts.” YPulse’s sports survey found that Black young people are the least likely to play tennis.
