Gen Z and Millennials are thinking about preventative Botox earlier and earlier. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 19% of about 4.4 million cosmetic Botox injections in 2020 went “into the faces of women under 40—and a startling 12,000 of those procedures are in girls ages 13 to 19.” The “preventative” Botox trend is popular among young people (especially young women) who have barely begun developing lines or wrinkles on their face (if at all). This preventative injection, often called “Baby Botox” because of the small amount used in younger patients, promises to stop “imperfections” from ever forming. For young people, being against such procedures is “almost unfashionable” since its social media popularity has repositioned cosmetic surgery as a “feminist-approved form of personal empowerment.” YPulse research shows social media is having a serious impact on the way young females see themselves and 63% say they wish they could look the way social media photo filters make them look IRL.
