Barbiecore is trending among Gen Z and Millennials this summer—but the fashion statement means more than just glitter and pink hues. Bold lashes, long nails, short skirts/dresses all in bright pink are taking over young womens’ closets but the Legally Blonde aesthetic goes beyond fashion, it’s a statement on feminism, diversity, and politics. Fashion industry experts are saying the trend is not solely based on the upcoming live action Barbie film, “The look, which LGBTQ icons like Lil Nas X and Laverne Cox have embraced…[is expanding] the notion of femininity to include people beyond blonde, white, heterosexual, cisgender women.” Young people are redefining how they want to be perceived IRL and they’re not shy when it comes to showing up for work or out to lunch in the hottest of pinks. The message behind Barbie is that “you can be anything” and Barbiecore is for young people unafraid to stand out, make a statement, and show that they can dress however they want. YPulse’s Fits For The Feed trend report data shows almost half of Gen Z and Millennials say they would wear outfits described as bold in their day-to-day lives. (Business Insider)
