“Sugar dating” is now a mainstream way for young people to make money—but it can be dangerous. YPulse’s Dating & Relationships report shows 18-39-year-olds are taking casual dating mainstream and “sugar dating” is making it profitable. Finding a “Sugar daddy” used to be a running joke for young college students looking for quick ways to make money, but the internet has been normalizing the industry. “Online platforms are connecting high-net worth individuals and young, attractive people,” but in order to stay legal, many sites state they prohibit prostitution and escorting. One website called Seeking Arrangement, “has dedicated a section of its website to ‘Sugar Baby University,’ positioning sugar dating as a fun, lucrative way to avoid student debt and boost career opportunities.” Yet there are still serious dangers that arise when money and intimacy are combined that make young people especially vulnerable. A new documentary titled, Secrets of Sugar Baby Dating is exposing the industry and educating viewers on how these arrangements can go very wrong. (CBC)
